16th & 17th August 2025: The Club spent a weekend exploring the Warrumbungle National Park. The task at hand was: Day 1: The Breadknife and Grand High Tops with Day 2: Tara Cave, followed up by Burbie Canyon.
On the weekend we were joined by former member Hans, with partner Leigh and ten club members. A neat dozen to compliment the weekend. Our newest club member Jane was welcomed and Lyn from the Dubbo area.
Leader(s): Kell and Jason ticked all the boxes for a spectacular variety of walks to suit all members and stayed on to explore some more on their day off!
Kell & Jason have added their walk report notes for future purposes. “What a great weekend!! Jase and I had the pleasure of leading a group into the Warrumbungles NP. Day 1; The jewel of all the walks in the park. The Breadknife and Grand High Tops walk (Pincham Trail), with a walk distance 12.5km (Grade 3: suited this group). Everyone supporting each other on the walk up the steep sections and the stairs-ask Michael ‘how many’. Stunning views and a few friendly Currawongs hoping to share our lunch, this was our reward for reaching the GHT. Day 2; saw us do 2 easier walks, of around 3.5km for the Tara Cave walk, 3km Burbie Canyon walk plus. Tara Cave offering a different perspective of the stunning views we had the day before of the Breadknife from the other side of the valley and some culture with the cave displaying aboriginal tool making grooves. Burbie Canyon shows off with lovely rock formations large tress and a wonderful view of split rock toward the end of the walk. We had no problems with any of the walks. All members expressing their enjoyment and enthusiasm to come back next year and do some of the other walks. Planning has already begun!” Great to be able to utilise the club equipment and have the Garmin on hand at all times with a (non-walking member on the day following the tracking). Weather for walking, a sunny and comfortable 11-14 degrees after some crisp morning frosts.
Highlight 1: Joby made it to the Breadknife to enjoy her packed lunch! The remainder of the group spent their lunch with spectacular views, (from the Grand High Tops), noting the walk is the jewel, depicting a natural rock ‘hole’ formation and taking in the expanse of the Warrumbungles. Highlight 2: ‘Nana’ Joby has 10 new young friends (Newcastle University Mountaineering Club)! see pic.
Accommodation was varied, car camping, tent, camper and to the spoils of motel accommodation for a few. Making travel easier for the folk that stayed at the National Park.
Photo(s): well you guessed it, as we all took way too many pictures to explode our FB/blogs, participants sent in these pictures for Joby to add to the club Gallery for all to see. Please note the pictures are from; Hans, Trish, Bill, Kell & Jason, John & Joby, Michael.

To-cap off the weekend! The above photo says it all – courtesy Michael Cook. We would like to thank both Kell & Jason for supporting and encouraging members on all aspects of their walk. With a safe return. Posted for website/FB.
