Cobbora ‘Journey of Discovery (Report)

Sunday 8 October 2023 As promised “Journey of Discovery” of Cobbora & Dunedoo area’s with Sharon Nott.

Cobbora Cemetery: was our first stop after meeting up with members and leader in Dunedoo. An old cemetery located 1km off the Golden Highway, noting the headstone of a Cobb & Co driver. (1901), and the well known Yeo, Martin families. Definitely worth a visit. A drive past the former Police Station, School and Hall.

Cobbora SCA: After a brief morning tea and club safety equipment distributed, members were given options for today’s walk. Noting that the Cobbora SCA covers 2261 hectares. We had all area’s covered as a few members had some minor injuries that would see them take in the day from another perspective. Artist Jenny took the opportunity to paint and to capture the ‘rest-point’ cave, while Joby took the opportunity to put her feet up & John Mc after his walk shared his bird knowledge. Other members took the opportunity to follow Sharon to an old sawmill and to explore the history of the site. All were able to sit with nature and enjoy lunch, the background rock formation was explored. Today’s walk had Johanna from Holland (Elly’s sister) join us. Lyn B. from Dubbo also took the opportunity to join in and check out the birdlife in the SCA. Walk distances varied today; 6km. The group then convoyed to the Dunedoo Woodland Learning Centre: adjoining the Dunedoo Cemetery.

Sharon introduced us to the: Dunedoo Woodland Learning Centre area, this included interpretive signage and is home to remnant endangered Grassy Box Woodland. Yellow Box and/or Blakely’s Red Gum trees and a ground layer usually dominated by perennial grass tussocks.

The two-four kilometre walking tracks meandered through 33 acres of Grassy Box Woodlands which used to dominate the Central West region but is now listed as an endangered ecological community in Australia under the NSW Threatened Species Conservation Act 1995. Less than one percent of the original Box-gum woodlands land remains with over five million acres destroyed. Ref: Dunedoo Woodland Learning Centre – Dunedoo | VisitNSW.com

The woodlands are located on Avonside Road near the Dunedoo Cemetery, just five minutes from town. The Dunedoo Woodlands are managed by the Dunedoo Coolah Landcare.

Access/Permission granted noting ‘key’ entry: to the SCA. Walk Participants: 16 Distance Walked: Some did a nice 8km. Walk grade: Easy to Medium. Photos: by Karen Riley, Joby Mitchell.
