Burrendong Botanic Gardens (Report)

Walk Report by Colleen Lovell. (#2 for 2023) Burrendong Botanic Garden and Arboretum. 26 February 2023.

“The usual meet at the park for car pooling to travel via Wellington and meet at the entrance to the Arboretum. Morning tea was held under the shade of the trees and watched by a flock of birds, which were very keen to help themselves. Another group perched; apostle birds (pictured in slideshow). Thirty two members/visitors had joined in for today’s outing and the group welcomed our 101th member. As usual the beginning of the walk was an incline, not too far, a few members spotted emus that were not far away and there were many kangaroos that bounded off as we approached. We headed up to Harris lookout where we could see over the valley with glimpses of the Burrendong Dam sparkling in the sunshine. Most of the walk was spent meandering at our own leisure looking at very unusual plants, many had seeded or the flowers were spent, but a few were still in bloom. We had lunch back in the car park and then went to visit the Fern Gully area, a man-made rainforest that is very pretty and peaceful. More flowers and seed pods to discover then a uphill walk back to the cars. I estimate the two walks were about 6k in total. A lovely outing and this would be spectacular in spring. Thanks to Glen and Renae for being our leaders and organising this outing”.
